Being a student is hard. Being a blogger is hard. Doing both at the same time is a disaster. It takes a lot of trial and error attempts before you learn how to balance blogging and school. You have to keep up with your social media accounts, you have to keep up with your posting schedule, you have to promote your posts, you have to maintain your website, etc.
If you didn’t know, I am in my Junior year of college, so I am just now getting the hang of balancing both blogging and school. While I am currently not making a lot of money on my blog, I consider blogging to be my job at school because I devote most of my time and energy into this website- and I love it.
In order to have new posts twice a week and social media covered, I have to seriously plan ahead. Here are some of my tips to balance blogging and school.
Schedule your Blog Posts
If you have any extra time or a long weekend, write a new post. If you have some random spurt of inspiration, write a new post. I typically schedule my posts ahead of time so that I can have my posts go up every Monday and Thursday. Being organized is so important. If you are not organized, you will drive yourself crazy!
Schedule your Social Media Posts
Speaking of scheduling, I use a program called, “Buffer” to schedule my social media posts- Twitter, Instagram, Google +, Facebook, etc. I love this program because you can just plop all of your tweets and Facebook posts into the queue and the program automatically posts the updates. This is so great because it is important to stay active on your social media accounts. Although I do like to schedule my social media posts, this doesn’t give me the excuse to check out and forget about it. I still try to stay active on Twitter and Facebook by replying to tweets and supporting others.
Schedule your pins
Another program I use is called, “Board Booster.” This is another automation tool like Buffer, but it is specifically designed for Pinterest. I am thinking about doing a post specifically about Board Booster because it can be kind of confusing. It basically pins throughout the day for you so you stay active and involved. It requires some planning ahead, but it is a lifesaver! Sign up here (I will get a referral credit if you sign up with this link!)
Use your Calendar App
The calendar app on the iPhone is by far my favorite app. Not only do I have my class schedule on here, but I also have a separate color for my blog posts. I like to put them in my calendar so that I can see where I have gaps and what I need to post next. Using the Calendar app keeps me in line and up to date.
Don’t Freak Out
My last tip is to not freak out if you miss a day of blogging or you miss a post. It happens to all of us and the only thing you can do is to move on. Sometimes it is good to take a break from blogging, so if you don’t post for a week or two, don’t fret! It’s all about balance. While you are in college, you’ll have awesome opportunities. If you are stuck between making memories and blogging, I personally would choose memories any day. Blogging will always be there for you, but college comes and goes so quickly.
