For the past year or so, I have been slowly transitioning to natural beauty and a non-toxic lifestyle. This lifestyle means limited processed foods, non-toxic makeup, tons of essential oils, and skincare without those nasty chemicals.
If you recall, I started this “transition” about a year ago when I jumped into the craze. I started out with a few skincare items that were non-toxic. When I first started out, I had a hard time finding “natural” products. More specifically, I had a hard time finding toxic-free makeup that would actually look good… Most of the products I tried were either slimy, oily, watery, or lacked coverage.
What really sparked me to research more about the non-toxic makeup brands was reading this book. I 100% recommend reading this for people who want to simplify their life in terms of health, bettering it step by step.
Once I realized that there were actually “clean” makeup brands, meaning no harmful chemicals, no chemicals that could cause allergies, and no chemicals that could cause cancer, my whole world opened up. The possibilities were suddenly endless!
The world of non-toxic makeup was opened for me, and through some trial and error, I think that I’ve found my new favorites that will stay a while in my makeup bag.
Transitioning to natural and non-toxic makeup was easier than I thought. At first, it was hard to give up my It Cosmetics CC + Cream, a crowd favorite, and it was hard for me to give up my eyebrow pomade when all of the natural ones I found were too orange or too dark for me. I was so sparked by the desire to create a healthier lifestyle that the transition wasn’t all that bad, though. When I realized that there were good brands out there, brands that created quality makeup, both in the appearance and the ingredients, my bank account slowly faltered as I filled up my makeup bag one item at a time.
Moving over to non-toxic makeup (minus the mascara part- I haven’t found one that I like yet) really has me feeling happy and good. After the whole “blogging rut” thing where I was stuck in the war of needing to only do fashion posts, I realized that I needed to do things that made me happy. My roommate might call me a hippie, but this makeup and this pursuit of a healthy lifestyle has got me happier than a girl with a credit card in Nordstroms.
At this point, changing to natural makeup isn’t even about the chemicals or the toxic rating, but it’s about finding what makes me happy. This makeup, although material, makes me happy. It makes me happy because I know that I am being healthy and I know that I am fueling my body with good ingredients and I am making my skin happy. I can’t even begin to describe how happy I am while writing this post.
So far, I’ve switched over all of my makeup (minus mascara), I’ve found new body wash, body lotion, skincare products, and I couldn’t be happier. I’m still on the hunt for some haircare products, and I’ve decided to cut my losses with the nail polish thing. I love my gel nail polish too much, sorry.
Let’s get into my favorites, shall we?
Concealer / Foundation
My first and foremost favorite is my newest addition, my concealer. I found this concealer at Anthropologie, surprisingly, and it is the best thing EVER. This concealer is so incredibly creamy, it blends well, it looks natural, and most importantly, it has incredible ingredients. This concealer works best when you use your finger to apply it, but if you must use a brush, a synthetic brush is recommended for a seamless blending process. This brand creates a brush to go with this that I am eyeing, but for now, I just use my fingers to apply! This concealer is so awesome because it looks like a second skin, aka it looks so natural, and it can also be used as a foundation if you’d like. What kind of threw me for a loop is that this concealer comes in a pot, not a brush or a stick. The good news is that it takes no time to get used to it and it lasts a long time. I got the shade, “22.” You can buy it here.
Face Foundation / Powder
My next favorite is my face powder. This Alima Pure powder, again, is natural, provides good coverage, and has wonderful ingredients. I might as well stop saying that these products have great ingredients because I think I’ve made that clear with the blog title… I haven’t had much time to really experiment with other powders, but so far, this powder is great. I have no complaints so far! You can buy it here.
From the same brand as the concealer is my favorite eyeshadow. I’m still trying to get the hang of this product, trying to figure out how I like to wear it best, but I already know that it’s in the top 3. This comes in a pot, just like the concealer, and it reminds me of a MAC paint pot. When I was purchasing this eyeshadow, I honestly had a hard time choosing which one I wanted! I really liked the color of “Myth,” but “Solar” was calling my name, especially since it made my blue eyes pop. Next I am planning on buying “Myth,” and “Lunar,” well, actually, I want all of them! I use my fingers to apply this product, but I also haven’t tried a brush with this. I find that with this brand, RMSbeauty, less is more. My mom’s advice is finally sticking and showing up in life! You just need a little bit of this product to make a statement and to make a pretty eye look. I’m completely obsessed. You can buy it here.
Next up, the brows. Finding a color for my eyebrows was hard for me. I knew that I wanted a pomade or gel, since I have been a longtime advocate of the Anastasia Pomade, but I could never find one to match me. Some people are passive about their brows, and I can be too, but a good eyebrow, even just filling it in a little bit, can change your day. I knew absolutely that I had to find a new and clean brow product because weird enough, my brows actually break out a lot. I think it’s from all of the bad ingredients in products. While I was in Los Angeles, I stopped in a few toxic-free makeup stores. I was in complete heaven, y’all. If these stores were in Birmingham, I would work there in a heartbeat. I am just passionate about these makeup products. While there were a lot of products for eyebrows, I chose the Ecobrow defining wax in the color, “Sharon.” I originally chose “Marilyn,” but it was just a little bit too light for my eyebrows. I have this issue where I highlight my hair but my brows stay dark. I cannot bring myself to lighten my eyebrows, so choosing a darker eyebrow gel was my route of choice. So far, I really like this pomade/wax/gel. It is JUST like the Anastasia gel, truly. There might not be as many colors available, but this stuff is legitimate and it’s great. I’m a big fan. You can buy it here.
Finding bronzer was similar in story to the brow pomade. In the natural beauty world, powder products are hard to come by and most makeup products are gel, creams, or liquids. It took me a couple of months to find a bronzer that I liked. I wanted something that looked natural, aka not orange, something that was a powder, and something that I could try out in stores to see how it worked with my skin tone. At the beauty store in LA, I was finally able to try out my bronzer (+ blush from the same brand!) and it was love at first sight! I got the color, “Bronze Goddess” from the brand Sappho New Paradigm. You can buy it here.
While I was at it, I got blush from the same brand, Sappho New Paradigm. The color I got was “Luv the Cheeks.” Just like the hunt for bronzer, I wanted to try the blush out in stores. The problem in the past was that the blushes I’ve tried have been too chalky, not pigmented enough, or just a yucky color that literally no one would ever think twice about wearing. This color is a darker color, but it gives the perfect rosy glow that is perfect for year-round. The products from this brand, both the blush and the bronzer, are super pigmented, so keep that in mind. Again, less is more! You can buy the blush here.
Those are my main items that I use everyday. Sometimes I switch it up, but these are my go-tos as of right now. I have a few other products that made the cut, but I currently don’t use them every single day. I love them just as much as the products I habitually use, but this girl likes to change things up.
Here are the other things in my makeup bag:
Tinted Moisturizer / Foundation
I love this BeautyCounter Tint Skin if I want some more coverage. I have been shying away from liquid products as my skin is getting clearer and I have been wearing less and less makeup, but this product isn’t forgotten. I have the color, “Honey,” and it is a good match. The only thing I wish this had was SPF or some sort of sun protection. I guess you can’t have it all! I would say that this product is great for dry or normal skin, but oily skinned girls should set it with a powder for sure! You can buy it here.
Two more products to go! This concealer is from the same brand as the Tint Skin, BeautyCounter. I love this concealer, especially the packaging! Okay, well everything from BeautyCounter is beautiful. I love the application process of this concealer. It has a little click button at the end and y’all, I just want to click it all day long, but I don’t because makeup is expensive. I have the color, “Light” and it is perfect for my “Light-Medium” skin tone. It has a bit of an orange tone to it, so that’s perfect for canceling out those dark circles! You can buy it here!
Last but not least, one more eyeshadow. This eyeshadow is from Alima Pure, same brand as the powder, and I have the color, “Mirage.” I was honestly disappointed with this product. I will use it if I’m trying to have a super natural color on my lids, but the pigmentation just doesn’t cut it for me. I have a really hard time getting color out of this eyeshadow. Maybe I need to scrape off a top layer, but something’s wacky with this. If I really put in some elbow grease, I can get a nice color for my eyelids, but again, it takes work. I’m wondering if the other colors are more pigmented… The powder from this brand has great pigmentation, so the quality of the eyeshadow leaves me shocked! You can buy it here (maybe try a different color!). You can buy the eyeshadow here!
Thank you all so much for reading! I’m very impressed if you made it all the way through— I definitely wrote way more than I typically write! As of right now, I am super passionate about natural and non-toxic beauty products, so I really do hope that this helped you! I truly believe that it is important to feel the best you that you possibly can! For me, feeling beautiful means investing in toxic-free makeup products. For others, feeling beautiful means something totally different.
