Hello sunny Switzerland! Today we left our hotel in Gimmelwald to head to Schilthorn, a 20 minute gondola ride away. We left at about 7:30AM because supposedly the clouds move in early and it’s not as crowded when you go as early. Oh my goodness was and is true. We got to the lookout point at about 8:00 and it was gorgeous. So beautiful. When I first saw the view, I almost started crying because God’s beauty is so wonderful. I cannot believe that He created something so wonderful and awesome.
For about 20-30 minutes, there was nearly no one there and there were barely any clouds in the sky. Within a few seconds, the clouds moved in and the mountain range was all covered up! We had great timing and everything- I’m so thankful for the wonderful opportunity!
After the clouds moved in, we headed to the buffet breakfast. Let me tell you- I love breakfast foods. Breakfast is definitely my favorite meal of the day and today I went all out. I mean, it was a buffet, so I naturally ate too much. But it was so good. There was everything from scrambled eggs to pancakes to DIY yogurt parfaits to croissants to Nutella. My goodness. So good.
Another fun part of this restaurant is that it revolves. This restaurant revolves 360º so that you can get a view of the whole mountain range while you are eating. It is so neat! We actually got a bit woozy while sitting up there. I still feel like I am swaying back and forth!
After we ate way too much, we headed back out to the lookout. The clouds were still covering up most of the mountains, but we decided to do the “Walk of Fame.” If y’all didn’t know, this area that we were in was made famous by James Bond. This is where they filmed the movie, “Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” There are James Bond references everywhere- in the gondola, in the bathroom, on the lookout platform, etc.
On this “Walk of Fame” people can walk out to an observation deck (so scary!) and have a better view. It is actually quite slippery because there was so much snow! I am so glad that I did it, though! It was scary, but it was worth it. You can see the play by play in my vlog down below.
At about 11:00 we headed down to Murren, the town one gondola ride up from Gimmelwald. We stopped at a restaurant for lunch called “Edelweiss” and then we decided to go on a hike! It was a hard hike (I’m definitely out of shape) because it was uphill and we were off-roading, if you will. It took us about an hour and a half or two hours to complete. It started to rain during our hike too, and we started to hurry along once we heard the accompanying thunder.
The hike was so beautiful because we saw so many wonderful views of Switzerland. This area is so indescribable and unbelievable. I cannot believe that I got the opportunity to come here. This is on my Top 3 List of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to.
We returned to the hotel, ate some amazing potato wedges (two servings actually… whoops) and then headed back to Murren for dinner. We walked up hill to get to dinner- it only took us about an hour- we worked up an appetite after those potatoes!
We ate at a very good restaurant called, “Restaurant Stagerstubli.” I’m sure you can already guess what I ordered. Yes, I got a vegetable plate! I’m so sorry that I’m so predictable and boring. Because my diet here consists of pastries 60% of the time, when I can get fruit or vegetables, I don’t turn down the offer. I ate some amazing asparagus- it seems that white asparagus is a specialty here in Switzerland (and Germany!).
We walked back down to the hotel and now we are about to pack and get ready for another early day tomorrow! We head to Montreaux tomorrow- more pictures of mountains coming your way!
