Let me tell you what you shouldn’t expect first:
You shouldn’t expect easy classes where you just read books all the time.
You shouldn’t expect it to be the easier major on campus.
You shouldn’t expect to make perfect grades on everything because “it’s easy.”
You shouldn’t expect it all to be fun and games (although some of it is).
You shouldn’t expect it to be easy.
When I tell people that my major is elementary education, I have one of two reactions. Scenario A is when the person begins to thank me and says something along the lines of, “God Bless you, we need more good teachers in this world.” Scenario B is when the person sighs and starts to talk about how easy I must have it because all elementary education majors do is read picture books all day long, right?
No! Although we do read some children’s books, we read so many that I will never want to look at a book again. In class right now, we are working on a project where we have to read 100 children’s picture books and we have to do a mini report on each one. Sounds simple, yes? Well, let me tell you that I’ve been working on it for 2 months and I only have half of the books done.
Being an elementary education major is not all fun and games. There is a lot of work and a lot of tedious work. There are long hours and lots of projects. Sure, I might not have to memorize every muscle and bone in the body, but I do have to spend hours writing lesson plans and making sure I include the state and national standards. I’m only in my sophomore year and there is a big workload. I am not even going to try to imagine the next few years… But you know what? All of this work is going to be so worth it because I am so excited to be a teacher and I am passionate about it. I am ready for the day when I get my first classroom on my first day of school.
If you want to be an elementary education major, please do it because it’s an awesome major. But please don’t expect it to be an easy major where you can just slide by in college. And to those who aren’t an education major, be courteous of all majors and don’t think that one is easier than another- they are all hard.
