I have always loved to journal. Something about the writing can calm me and help me sort my thoughts. I started journaling in about sixth grade (when life was really tough, ya know?), and continued until high school. Then, I journaled off and on until this year.
This semester I’ve picked up journaling again. I can’t really say why I stopped, probably because of the time commitment, but I am loving it once again!
In a sense, blogging is considered a form of journaling for me. I can express my thoughts, write about anything I want, and look back on what I wrote months ago.
To me, journaling is really important. Now that I’ve picked it back up, I can say that I love to write and journal to mainly spill my thoughts out and to reflect on my life. In education, we are constantly reflecting, so maybe my classes are rubbing off on me outside of class, but reflecting really does work wonders (thanks, teachers!). Reflecting is important because it is when you take a step back, see things from a different perspective, or see what you learned. Here are some of the reasons why I think YOU should journal:
Reason 1: Journaling brings mental clarity.
Truly, this is one of the main reasons why I journal. There is something about writing that is so calming. The way that words can be spilled out on the paper- they create a beautiful mess. I think it’s wonderful how something so messy and raw can become something incredibly beautiful. When I am able to express myself through my words, calmness and peace take over me. I can solve problems, I can reach conclusions, and I feel better overall.
Reason 2: It’s a good way to document your life.
While journaling about what happens in my everyday life is fun and all, it can be a bit boring to just retell my normal day. Instead, I like to document and reflect on the big things happening in my life. I like to share what I struggle with, what I’m grateful for, and what major events are happening in my life, if any.
Reason 3: Journaling is fun to look back on.
One of my favorite things to do is to go back a few months, or even a few years, and read my old entries. Isn’t it crazy to see how God has worked in your life, how He has fulfilled promises, and how much your life has changed? It is just amazing and wonderful how God changes your life, week by week, month by month. His promises are always true and He is always faithful to us, no matter what.
Reason 4: It’s a safe place to write your goals, your fears, your hopes, and your dreams.
It can be quite daunting to write down your aspirations, your goals for life, your hopes, your dreams for the future. It can be scary to admit those things that you keep inside of your head, whether it be things you are afraid to share, or if it is something that you hope to be one day. Sure, journals and diaries were once known to write down your secrets or who you had a crush on in 5th grade, but they are something so much more than that. It can be where you write down your emotions, where you release what you’ve been building up.
Reason 5: It can be whatever you want it to be.
To some, a journal is where you color and paint. To others, a journal is where you post pictures and happy thoughts. A journal can be anything that you want. Anything. There are billions of types of journals, not just the ones that you write in. A journal is meant to creatively express yourself, to express your feelings and to just reflect on life. I have a few journals that I use for different reasons. Sometimes I feel like coloring, sometimes I feel like doodling, and other times I feel like writing. It really depends on the day. If I’m stressed, I write why in my journal. If I’m happy, I write why in my journal. If something fantastic happened, I write about it. The possibilities are endless and I recommend journaling to all of my friends. You’d be surprised how great a stress reliever this is.
I hope y’all enjoyed this post today! I am so passionate about journaling. I have heard of a bullet journal and I might look into starting one, but I also want to start a journal for when I travel. Wow, I’m such a geek, wanting to start more journals! But seriously, y’all, please start a journal for whatever purpose you want. Journaling is great and it’s really just what you make it! Have a happy Friday, y’all!
